Players must be strategic about which race they enter and best match their horse to the distance, surface type, race conditions, weather, and field of horses competing. Once players select the race they want to enter, they will come across the race preparation screen.
Before a race, players need to:
Set their tactics - Players can set up two tactics during the race: primary and secondary. The secondary tactic is employed if the original tactic has not worked by the race’s midpoint. Players should look to align their race tactics with their horses’ skills genetic traits, and preferences.
Equip their horses – equipment provides ”buffs” (temporary boosts) to core attributes for the race. This is especially useful if you are adding your horse to a very competitive field.
Different tactics and equipment can be applied to each of a player's horses in a race. What is applied will depend on the horse's characteristics, skills, and abilities and the tactical goals of its owner.
Horses have both race tactical preferences that are genetic and tactics for an individual race that the owner sets. Horses are typically innately Front-Runners, Stalkers, or Closers.
Front-running: With this tactic, horses prefer to get out ahead of the pack and run from the front. These horses will typically be the first towards the front right out of the gate and try to lead the entire race.
Closing: Closers are horses who typically stay at the back of the pack for most of the race. They conserve their stamina until the end of the race, where they will attempt to come from behind to win dramatically.
Stalking: Stalkers are horses that like to sit just behind the leaders during the race. They will try to remain behind the leader or the lead pack, draft them, and conserve some stamina until the later stages of the race, where they will use their reserved energy to try and pass the leader.
